Honours for University of Nottingham staff

A number of University of Nottingham staff and alumni were recognised in the 2013 Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

Professor Nick Miles (Mining Engineering 1983 PhD) received an OBE in recognition of his work to further UK/China educational interests. Professor Miles is Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Provost of the University of Nottingham Ningbo China(UNNC), leading on the University’s activities at the campus, which has 5,500 students and more than 500 staff.

Melanie Futer, Manager for Off-Campus Student Affairs, was awarded an MBE for services to higher education and community engagement. She has transformed the University’s engagement with its local community and worked to educate students on their responsibilities as residents of that wider community.

Among the alumni community: Honorary graduate Professor Nigel Richard Shadbolt. (Hon DSc 2011), Professor of Artificial Intelligence, University of Southampton, became a Knights Batchelor for services to science and engineering; Dinah Elizabeth Caine OBE (Politics 1981), Chief Executive Officer, Creative Skillset was awarded a CBE for Services to Creative Industries; Professor Christopher Wathes (PhD 1978 Environmental Physics) formerly Chariman of the Farm Animal Welfare Committee.  Robert Last (Human Rights Law 2000), a senior human rights adviser, UK Mission to the United Nations was awarded an MBE as was Charles Trippe (Industrial Economics 1965) for services to tennis.

MBEs were awarded to George Hitchon (Horticulture 1967) for services to the community in Ayr and Ann Hambly (MEd Education 1998), Head of Special Educational Needs and Advance Skills Teacher, Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Ashbourne.
